Human molEculaR gEnetics And EpigeneTics research Laboratory (HEREAT)

The laboratory's research began in 2005 at Istanbul Technical University's Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics under the leadership of Prof. Eda Tahir Turanlı. Since 2021, Prof. Tahir Turanlı has been the Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Acıbadem University. Her team focuses on the genetics and epigenetics of neurological and inflammatory diseases, with a particular emphasis on conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Autoinflammatory diseases, and neuropsychiatric disorders. After identifying candidate genes through genome/exome sequencing and bioinformatics analyses, the team performs functional analysis of these genetic variants using cell culture and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models.

The laboratory collaborates with prestigious national and international institutions, including Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa, Marmara University, the National Institutes of Health, and Commonwealth University, to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of human molecular genetics.

Impacts on Genetic of Complex Diseases

The concept of incomplete penetrance in genetics, a phenomenon where not everyone carrying a specific genetic mutation exhibits the associated traits or symptoms. By examining its role in complex diseases like Multiple Sclerosis (MS), the post highlights how incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity contribute to the variability in disease expression, even among individuals with similar genetic backgrounds. It also discusses a recent study on multiplex MS families, emphasizing the interplay of common and rare genetic variants in MS heritability.
